Doing Politics Differently
In 2019 The Swale Independents Alliance was formed, bringing various local individuals and groups together to try and make politics in Swale a more representative and more engaged process. Following the Swale Borough Council elections that year, the Swale Independents helped form a 5-group coalition to run the Council and help introduce the changes that would improve politics in Swale.
This has resulted in a more dynamic and positive Council that has focussed on local people and communities, rather than engaging in Housing Developer-led priorities and highly speculative projects that had no public support. The Coalition at Swale has overseen the most dynamic and positive period in Swale politics for many years, addressing years of under investment by the previous administrations and actively promoting the area as a place to visit and to do business.
We have supported community groups and helped fund village halls, helped introduce many life-saving defibrillators, and delivered new leisure facilities and equipment. We have produced long-overdue new Strategies to promote tourism and to protect our heritage, whilst taking strong action on our environment and air quality.
We have also set up schemes to support our most vulnerable with our fuel-poverty strategy and support for food banks, whilst taking huge steps forward in tackling homelessness and rough sleeping.
We have demonstrated that where Councillors work together they deliver far more for our communities than when they indulge in party politics. Going forward we want to embed this process even further into our local politics and ensure that every Councillor is able to represent their constituents fully within the decision making process.
